According to testimonies collected on the spot by our colleagues from Top Buzi, the women and children of this environment saw, in the afternoon, the fish approaching the surroundings without knowing the origin.
A few hours after this appearance, the shore of Lake Kivu was invaded by people coming from all over, young girls, boys, parents with vases to catch fish floating on the waters of the lake.
For his part, Alexis Mbavu Paypay, head of the administrative jurisdiction of Minova, calls on the population to be careful since in such situations it is human lives that run the risk of drowning following the haste of wanting to catch fish.
Recall that the last explosion of methane gas in this agglomeration located in the Gulf of Kabuno dates back to between 2004 and 2006.
A few months ago, the National Hydrocarbons Minister, Didier Budibu, visited the Gulf of Kabuno in South Kivu in the company of methane gas experts. Minister Budibu had reassured that a company had already been selected to begin degassing work at Kabuno.
Barely a year later, nothing has been done on the spot and the local populations continue to live with this gas, a permanent danger whose effects are already being felt.”
