Illinois 13thCongressional District’s Gerrymandering Robs Voters of Competitive Elections
The Illinois 13th Congressional District (CD) is one of the most gerrymandered CDs in America. The CD is a narrow squiggly ribbon running from metro East St. Louis through Springfield and Decatur ending in Champaign County.
The Il-13th CD comprises parts of 6 counties and all of only one county – Macoupin. Six of the seven counties were gerrymandered to maximize the Democratic vote in the 13th , and thus, minimize the Republican vote. Even though Republican candidates for congress in the seven counties, as a whole, beat the Democratic candidates by 12,990 votes (see table below), Rep. Buzinski was able to win easily by 33,142 votes.
What could have been competitive congressional elections for central Illinois citizens were gerrymandered into a rout for the 13th District Democratic candidate.”
