Americans, for the most part and for most of our history, have never suffered real, unbridled government repression. Sadly, it is this very experience that is doing so much to make the gathering twilight of fascism so much more possible in the United States.
Having never suffered under government repression or feared arrest and torture, Americans have little to no idea what they are so willingly throwing away. Nor do they believe that the dictatorship’s repression will be visited upon them — in fact, they cheer the violence and repression visited upon the people and groups that they hate. However, it’s just a matter of time before the fear, violence, and repression they cheered for comes knocking on THEIR door.
Pastor Niemoller really summed up the experience of people who’ve never suffered government repression:
